On Monday afternoon, seven year 8 and 9 students made the short trip over to Corfe Hills to compete in a U14 PEDSSA Basketball tournament.
Magna were drawn in ‘Pool B’ and came up against some tough opposition early on. Finding it difficult to get into the groove of the short 10 minute match times, Magna lost their opening two games despite battling hard.
Things didn’t look like they were going to get much better in the third and final pool game either, with Magna going down 0-6 by half time. After a stern half time team talk from Mr Ginger, the boys sprung into life in the second half and scored an astonishing five baskets without reply to take a quite breathtaking 10-6 comeback victory. Archie J stole the show by scoring from five lay ups (something we have worked very hard on in training) in just five minutes to turn the game on its head.
This led to Magna finishing 3rd out of 4 in ‘Pool B’ which meant a date with the 3rd placed team from ‘Pool A’ in the playoffs. Magna continued their impressive resurgence with a dominating 6-0 win to round things off. Particular highlights were Mckenzie S’ resolute and determined defensive display, Kobe E’s leadership and communication as captain and Archie J’s fantastic finish from distance. This victory meant that Magna finished a very respectable 5th out of the 8 teams overall.
After asking what had made the difference between the first and last two performances, the boys commented “maybe you need to be a lot tougher with us more often Mr Ginger!”.
Well done to each and every one of you, you all showed your resilience and determination to comeback from a disappointing start to finish on a high. See you all at training next week.
