The Magna Academy Cricket team enjoyed an outing to Broadstone CC on Wednesday evening to play a 20 over fixture against a local school.
Captain James H won the toss for Magna and elected to bowl. Opening bowler Noah C got Magna off to an absolute flyer with his maiden over helping to apply early pressure. Skipper James H then added to this from the other end by grabbing a couple of wickets in another excellent over that went for just 2 runs. The opposition were 1/2 from 2 overs and Magna were well on top. Year 7 student Jake A then struck in the next over to leave the opposition 5/3 after 3 overs. Magna bowlers Matthew C and Bailey H then worked hard to keep the scores tight in well bowled overs of their own. The next wicket to fall came courtesy of spin bowler Kieran I and with figures of 1/6 from his 2 overs bowled, this left the opposition reeling at 29/4 from 7 overs. Anslay V would then produce the best fielding moment of the match, with his smart quick pick-up and shy at the stumps running out the opposition’s top scorer to leave them at 38/5. Magna would then go on to take a further 3 wickets at the expense of just 2 runs with Year 10 students Charlie A, Kurgan W and Oliver M all getting in amongst the wickets whilst bowling impressively accurate overs. The opposition were now 40/8. Oliver M picked up another wicket before Annabelle W and Anslay V would continue to keep runs at a minimum with good spells of length bowling. Jake A, Noah C and Anslay V finished off the innings with the final 3 wickets. The Magna fielding unit backed up the good work from the bowlers, keeping the runs to a minimum and helping to build the pressure. A special mention to Annabelle W for putting their body on the line for the team with some sharp fielding at mid-wicket. The opposition were all out for 88 and Magna needed to chase 89 to win the match.
Ryan R (30 from 20 balls retired n.o.) and Anslay V (31 from 22 balls retired n.o.) set the tone excellently by compiling forceful boundaries and manipulating the opposition fielders with fine shot placement to leave Magna needing under 10 to take the victory. The runs were knocked off by skipper James H (5 from 6 balls n.o.) and Oliver M (3 from 3 balls n.o.) to give Magna a very impressive 10 wicket victory!
I want to take the time to congratulate all of the cricketers’ hard work during Cricket club this year and this hard work definitely paid off during this fixture. Wednesday night was a fantastic way to finish the academic year and we will look forward to another Cricketing season next summer. A special mention must go out to Mr Poole who leaves us this year, Mr Poole has been instrumental in facilitating the development of Cricket culture here at Magna Academy this year.
