Year 7 Footballers record their first victory!
The Year 7 Football team made the short trip over to a local school on Wednesday afternoon.
Magna Academy made a very fast start to the game and found themselves 1-0 up after no time at all, left winger Bailey Doe with a smashing finish into the top corner from the edge of the area. Magna continued to signal their intent by doubling their lead just 5 minutes later, striker Harley Ricketts with his first goal of the season after a controlled finish from close range.
The opposition then began to grow into the game. Centre midfielder Harry Brodie helped the team to maintain control of the game with excellent ball winning and retention skills. Captain James Harris displayed another excellent performance at centre back, making a couple of last ditch goal-saving tackles and interceptions as well as leading the defensive line. With 5 minutes to go until the half-time break, Bailey doubled his tally with another excellent finish from the edge of the area. Magna Academy were 3-0 up at half time.
The second half started very similarly to the first, with Magna Academy on the front foot. Winger Noah Banwell continued to torment the home team’s defence with his penetrating runs both on and off the ball, with their goalkeeper managing to stop a couple of shots from Noah to just about keep them in the contest. Defender Harry Valentine also shone brightly in the second period, producing some important tackles and starting multiple attacks from his pin-point passing out of defence. Magna finally found their fourth goal with around 15 minutes to play, Harley grabbing his second of the game following in from a rebound after another Noah shot on goal – a proper centre forward’s goal! Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t quite manage to keep their clean sheet, conceding a rebounded goal of their own just before the full time whistle.
Final score 1-4 to Magna Academy.
All in all, this was a very well deserved victory for the Y7 Football team. The squad continues to grow and improve as a result of excellent attendance to Football club on Thursdays and a consistently applied professional and dedicated attitude towards the school football team. Well done boys, I am looking forward to the next half term already!
Mr Ginger’s Man of the Match: Bailey Doe-An excellent all round wing display, working hard in defence and attack and capping it off with a brace.
