At Magna Academy all Year 12 students work towards the Aspirations Employability Diploma. AED is a programme unique to Aspirations Academies Trust. Study of the AED enables students’ continuous reflection with regard to career planning. It sets a framework formed around a series of driving research questions, and allows students to develop a range of professional skills to maximise their learning potential.
Year 12 are currently working on a real world problem which is recruitment in the NHS and social care in Boscombe. To build on their understanding of some of the current issues for NHS workers, our students met Carrie Hartridge who is part of the trade union Unison who have many members who work in the NHS. We believe that our students should have a good understanding of the work of trade unions.
Learning about trade unions teaches students the importance of workers’ rights, collective action, and social justice. It highlights unions’ historical role in improving labor laws and workplace conditions. This knowledge empowers students to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the value of equitable practices in the workforce and broader society
