The Magna Changemakers for Climate Group (MCMC) are developing biodiversity and rewilding the Magna Academy grounds. The group which is made up with students across all years, have been busy planting during their lunch breaks. The plants were donated by Southern Aquatics and a Magna family.
Biodiversity is the variety of life in an area. It is important because it prevents any one species from becoming extinct. However, since 1970, Britain has lost about half of its biodiversity and is sitting on a ‘tipping point’. If this trend of loss continues, we will face the mass extinction of hundreds, if not, thousands of species, not in 100 years time, but more like 30 years. That could lead to the collapse of ecosystems and would leave us without a way to pollinate our food.
With our ever-changing climate it is critical that we take action to adapt and limit the effects both as individuals and as a society. It is important that we integrate this behaviour into our lifestyles or it will only get worse. This is, in part, the responsibility of the academy to extend education away from just academics but also how to become a capable, responsible citizen.
