In our final summer term, Year 10 students have had a full programme of advice and guidance on their choices for their Post 16 courses. All schools must ensure that students have access to information about the full range of education and training options available to them at each transition point.

Our summer programme starts with a full and bespoke assembly programme for Year 10 from a full range of Post 16 providers offering different Post 16 options for our learners. This is followed by a Post 16 Careers Fair when students get the opportunity to ask questions to help them make those important decisions about their next steps.

This is a full list of those providers who attended our careers fair:

  • Magna Academy Sixth Form
  • Bournemouth and Poole College
  • Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester
  • AFC Bournemouth Football Academy
  • Rockley College
  • Ask Apprenticeships
  • The Royal Air Force
  • Tops Day Nursery
  • Kier Infrastructure
  • Superior Seals
  • Bournemouth University

We believe it is really important to provide this guidance in Year 10 as this will support our students when they return in September to start their final GCSE year to concentrate on their studies already equipped with the advice and guidance they need for their next steps. Students who have a good idea of their education and career pathways have increased motivation and engagement in their learning. Clear career aspirations help students set specific academic goals, knowing what is required to achieve these goals can drive students to work harder and stay focused.

Furthermore Year 10 students have also completed a week of work experience and have taken part in mock interviews with external guests to Magna Academy. Our Year 10 students either worked with the academy to find a placement or we were delighted that many of our students managed to find their own work placement. Students went to a wide range of places for their work experience. We were grateful to our local schools and nurseries for the many placements that they provided, but students also worked at Laceys solicitors, Hays Travel, Local Estate Agents, local hairdressers, golf courses, hotels, large companies and various local branches of Tesco.

Work experience offers numerous benefits for our Year 10 students, providing them with valuable insights, skills, and opportunities that can significantly impact their personal and professional development. Following their week of work experience students were challenged to identify what might make them happy in their future careers. Students cited a rewarding career by supporting others, working with other people who they liked and trusted and being challenged on a daily basis.

To complete the Year 10 summer futures programme all Year 10 students had access to a mock interview with an external guest to Magna Academy. Students were asked about their strengths and interests, their Post 16 education and career plans and their reflections of their work experience week. Mock interviews offer a wide range of benefits for Year 10 students in the UK, helping them prepare for future job interviews, boost their confidence, and develop essential skills. We were delighted with our team of interviewers and the fantastic support they offered our young people.

I thought that the young people had all been well prepared for their mock interviews and generally displayed an impressive level of confidence. We had some very informative and interesting conversations which I enjoyed. Magna has some very talented young people and it was a pleasure to meet with them.

Councillor Sandra Moore

I've really enjoyed talking to your students; they are such a credit to your school. It’s clear that a lot of effort is put into ensuring they are well-equipped to embark on the careers they aspire to in the future.
